"Private" is the most overused word in AI marketing. Every product has a privacy page. Few answer the questions that matter: is my chat used for training, how long does the model provider keep it, can I make a conversation disappear, and can I delete everything myself?

What to look for

Five criteria separate real privacy from a privacy page.

No training on your data, by default. A setting you have to find is not the same as a policy.

Incognito or temporary chats. For one-off questions you do not want in your history.

There is a sixth, honest criterion: capability. The strictest option is a model on your own laptop, and it is also the weakest. Decide what you are protecting against first.

Gemini

Gemini's privacy runs on Google's activity controls. With activity on, conversations are saved to your Google account and can be used to improve Google's services, and Google's notice says some may be reviewed by humans. Turning activity off changes retention, and a temporary chat option exists.

Gemini's strength is integration with Gmail, Docs and Drive, which is also the reason for care: the account that holds your email holds your chats. Decide whether you want that consolidation.

Perplexity

Perplexity is a search-first assistant with an incognito mode and a data retention setting that controls whether your activity is used to improve its models.

Perplexity routes to several model providers behind the scenes, so read its policy on what those providers retain, not just what Perplexity retains.

DuckDuckGo AI Chat

DuckDuckGo's AI Chat needs no account. It proxies your requests so the model provider does not see your IP address, and states that its providers agreed not to use chats for training and to delete them after a limited period. Chat history, where available, stays on your device.

The tradeoff is capability: a smaller set of models, no persistent projects, no connected files and no workspace. It is a private question box, and it is not trying to be more.

Local clients: Ollama, LM Studio and Jan

Running a model on your own machine is the only setup where nothing leaves your device. Ollama, LM Studio and Jan make it easy, and open-weight models from Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek and Mistral are genuinely useful for drafting, summarizing and code.

The tradeoffs are hardware and ceiling. A laptop runs small and mid-size models, not the frontier, with no web search unless you wire it up and no mobile sync. For a journalist with a source to protect, that trade can be correct.
