Best AI for students: study help, notes and feedback for free
Free AI study help: explain concepts, summarize lecture PDFs, quiz yourself and get essay feedback, then check answers with a second model. No credit card.
What students actually need from an AI
Most students do not need the largest model available. They need something that explains a concept three different ways, works from the lecture slides in front of them, checks an answer before an exam and gives feedback on a draft. They also need it to cost little or nothing, and to be honest about what it does not know. Quad's Free plan has no credit card and includes 100 credits a month, 250 MB of file storage and core models from several labs. Cited web search is included and uses the same credits. That is enough for regular study sessions, and the apps work on the web, iPhone and Android with chats synced between them. Quad requires users to be 13 or older.
Free models worth trying first
All of these are available on the Free plan. Roles are suggestions to test, not rankings. GPT-6 Luna (Role to try: Quick explanations and practice questions; Available on: Every plan, Free included; Context window: 1.05M; Catalog flags: tool calling, reasoning, image input). Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite (Role to try: Summaries of long notes and readings; Available on: Every plan, Free included; Context window: 1M; Catalog flags: tool calling, reasoning, image input). Claude Haiku 5.5 (Role to try: Rewording and tone in your own writing; Available on: Every plan, Free included; Context window: 1M; Catalog flags: tool calling, reasoning, image input). Kimi K3 (Role to try: A long-context second opinion; Available on: Go plan and up; Context window: 1M; Catalog flags: tool calling, reasoning, image input). DeepSeek V4 Flash (Role to try: Step-by-step reasoning on problems; Available on: Every plan, Free included; Context window: 1M; Catalog flags: tool calling, reasoning). Image input is supported on most of these, so you can photograph a whiteboard or a textbook diagram and ask about it. DeepSeek V4 Flash is text-only. Paid plans add stronger models, such as Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol on Pro, if you hit the Free limits.
Study workflows that use more than one model
Learn a concept: ask for the idea in plain words, then with an analogy, then with a worked example. Ask a second model to explain it differently if the first did not click. Work from your notes: attach a lecture PDF or a PowerPoint and ask for a summary by section, key terms and likely exam questions. Then ask what the slides leave out. Quiz yourself: ask for ten questions of rising difficulty without answers, write your own, then ask for the answers and an explanation of every one you missed. Check a solution: solve the problem yourself, then ask a model to find the first step where your reasoning breaks. Send the same problem to a second model; where they disagree, check the textbook. Revise an essay: ask for feedback on structure and clarity, not for a rewrite, and keep the changes in your own voice. Find sources: turn on web search and open every citation. Never cite a source you have not read. If you study the same course all term, keep the syllabus and your standing instructions in Quad's memory document, or put the course files in a project, so every new chat starts with that context.
Use it to learn, and follow your school's rules
AI makes it easy to produce an answer without understanding it, and that costs you at exam time. Try the problem first, then use the model to find gaps. Rules on AI use differ by school, course and instructor, and some assignments forbid it entirely. Read your syllabus, ask when it is unclear and disclose AI help where required. Quad cannot make that call for you. Models can be wrong with confidence, particularly on maths, citations and recent events. Verify against your textbook or course materials. Do not paste exam questions during a closed-book assessment. Do not upload other people's private information.
When a paid plan is worth it
Stay on Free until you run out of credits during real study sessions. Go is $8 a month with 1200 credits, and Pro is $15 a month with 2,000 credits and the premium chat models. Yearly billing is up to 15% less, and you can cancel anytime. Credits reset monthly and do not roll over, so the cheapest plan that covers your busiest weeks is the right one.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI for students?
Quad's Free plan includes 100 credits a month and models such as GPT-6 Luna, Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite and Claude Haiku 5.5, with no credit card. Cited web search is included and uses the same credits. Which model suits you best varies, so try the same question on two.
Can I use AI to study from my lecture notes?
Yes. Attach PDFs, Word or PowerPoint files and ask for summaries, key terms or practice questions. Text extraction works on selectable text, so scanned image-only pages may not be read.
Is it cheating to use AI for homework?
That depends on your school, course and assignment. Some allow AI for study and feedback and forbid it for graded work. Check your syllabus, ask your instructor if unsure and disclose AI use where required.
How do I know the AI's answer is right?
Check it against your textbook, solve the problem yourself first and send it to a second model. If two models disagree, treat that as a prompt to verify. Turn on web search and open the citations for factual claims.
Does Quad work on my phone?
Yes. Quad has native iPhone and Android apps and a web workspace, and chats sync across them. Every plan, including Free, includes the apps.
Is my study data used to train AI?
No. Quad does not use your conversations or files to train its own models, on any plan.
