# Quad Chat vs Open WebUI: Self-Hosted or Ready to Use?

Open WebUI is one of the most capable self-hosted chat interfaces you can run. It installs on your own server or laptop, talks to local models through Ollama and to cloud providers through OpenAI-compatible APIs, and gives you a polished interface with document uploads, multi-user accounts and an extension system you control end to end.

The core difference is that Open WebUI is software you run and Quad Chat is a service you use. With Open WebUI, the models, hosting, API keys, updates and backups are yours. With Quad, [70+ models](/models) are included in the plan, and live web search with citations, Image Studio, projects, automations, app connectors and native mobile apps are already switched on. You never paste a key.

> **Quick verdict:** Choose **Open WebUI** if you need full control of your deployment, run local models on your own hardware, or your data must never leave your infrastructure. Choose **[Quad Chat](/)** if you want the latest GPT, Claude and Gemini models included in one plan, with research, Studio, projects, connectors and mobile ready on day one.

## Control is the product, and control has a price

Open WebUI's pitch is ownership. You choose the models, the storage, the auth, the theme and the extensions, and you decide what it connects to. For a strict data-residency rule, that is exactly right.

Quad's pitch is that most people do not want to own any of that. They want to open a tab, ask the latest GPT, Claude or Gemini model a question, switch to [DeepSeek V4](/models/deepseek-v4) or Qwen mid-thread without losing context, compare two or three models on the same prompt, and get on with the day.

## Total cost of ownership: the download is free, the workflow is not

Open WebUI costs nothing to download. The bill arrives in three other places. API usage: frontier models need your own keys, every provider bills per token, and you see the total at month end. Hosting: something has to run the container all day, and capable local models add a GPU with enough memory to hold them. Time: installation, updates that change behavior, authentication, backups, and the afternoon it stops working before a deadline.

Quad folds all of it into one number. Free is $0 with 100 shared credits. Go is $8 for 1,200 shared credits, Pro is $15 for 2,000 shared credits, Ultra is $40 for 5,000 shared credits with video generation, and Max is $200 for 25,000 shared credits. Yearly billing saves up to 15% on Pro, Ultra and Max; Go is monthly only. Web search uses the same credits. Teams pay $20 per seat for Pro-level access or $40 per seat for Ultra-level access, on one invoice.

If you already run a home server and mostly use local models, Open WebUI can be extremely cheap. If you want frontier models every day, the API bill alone often reaches a Quad plan before you count the hosting or your evenings.

## What a bare model connection does not include

Open WebUI connects you to models. The rest of the working day has to be assembled:

- **Cited web search** on every plan, with no search backend to configure.
- **Files, PDFs and projects** that keep context across sessions and devices.
- **Studio**: Nano Banana Pro, FLUX Kontext, GPT Image 2, Seedream and Recraft for images, and Veo 3.1, Kling and Seedance for video on Ultra and up.
- **Automations and Computer**: any prompt on a schedule, and a sandbox that runs commands, writes files and returns bundles.
- **Apps connectors** for Notion, Google Workspace, Slack, Linear, Dropbox, Microsoft 365, Todoist and Spotify, plus MCP servers and Skills.
- **Native mobile** in 33 languages, and **team billing** with one invoice, per-seat budgets and private member workspaces.

On Open WebUI each of those is an extension, a key or a script on your list rather than a feature already on.

## Where Open WebUI is the better choice

Open WebUI deserves the shortlist if:

- your data must stay on hardware you control, full stop;
- you run open-weight models on your own GPU and want a good interface for them;
- you want to customize the interface, prompts and pipelines at the code level;
- or zero vendor lock-in is a hard requirement and you are happy to operate a service.

## Where Quad Chat is the better choice

Quad deserves the shortlist if:

- you want to start now, as a guest, with nothing to install and no credit card;
- you want the latest GPT, Claude and Gemini models included rather than billed per token;
- your work moves between cited research, files, projects, Studio, automations and connectors;
- the same threads need to follow you to your phone, or your team wants one invoice;
- or you want strong privacy without running the server: no training on your data, Zero Data Retention provider routes where available in the Private Lane, and self-service export and deletion. See the [security page](/security).

## Final verdict

**Open WebUI is the stronger choice when control of the stack is the point. Quad Chat is the stronger choice when getting work done with many models is the point.**

Running your own interface is sometimes a requirement and sometimes a hobby. For everyone else, Quad delivers the workspace already assembled, for a price you see before you send a prompt.
